Our Story
Michael and Stuart purchased the Schoolhouse in early 2025 and undertook an extensive restoration project to start the next chapter in the property’s history.
The Linen Schoolhouse was created to share this incredible historic building with visitors to the Ards Peninsula as an immersive tourism experience.
History
The Linen Schoolhouse was first opened as Crommelin National School in 1904. The naming was in homage to the Crommelin family who supported the development of the school. At its peak there were over 100 children being taught here.
Following the Second World War schools in the area experienced much lower student numbers, which resulted in a number of them closing and consolidating their numbers. The Crommelin School in Carrowdore closed in the 1950’s.
From the 1950’s until 1970 the Schoolhouse took on a new life as a textile factory and workshop. There are very few records of the designs created during this period.
In the 1970’s the Crawford Family purchased the property and renovated it into a family home. It remained in the family until it was purchased by the current owners in 2025.
The Linen Schoolhouse was established in 2025 to share the history, local culture and architecture with visitors to the Ards Peninsula.
